Had a good day over at Newton beach today. Tony Low drove us over in style
- packing my gear onto his trailer for a change.
Wind was howling on arrival - Tony rigged his 4.2m but I thought it was
dropping slightly, so rigged my old 4.7m Zeta on the 78l JP Wave.
Have to say, despite the SSW wind direction - with an 8 mile clear fetch
across the Bristol Channel from Dartmoor, which should have given really
clean wind, it was incredibly gusty. So although I spent a lot of time
wallowing up to my knees, and even flopping in backwards, at other time,
the sail was practically being torn out of my grip. Generally it was a
wallow out, just beyond the serious waves & really confused water, gybe,
then scream back in on the fin until a huge lull appeared! A bit
intimidating at 1'st, but was able to settle in & enjoy it after a
while.
Monster swells out in the bay - well over head height. Jumps off the back
of the waves unavoidable! Trouble is, it was starboard tack - being a
Weston sailor, I'm a bit of a wuss on starboard!
Probably the best sail I've ever had on the JP, though.
Good to meet Kelvin there - arrived later & got a little less of the wind
as it seemed to drop off.
Traffic along the M4 past Cardiff & Newport on the way back was crap,
though.
